The international standardization bodies ISO and IEC are developing a new international standard for Software Asset Management (SAM). The draft standard consists of two parts and the first part, ISO/IEC 19770-1 Software Asset Management Processes is now available for public review.
The standard consists of two parts; part one describes the processes involved in SAM and part two defines a product identification that will simplify the software inventory process.
The standard will be unique as it combines process descriptions and software adaptations without the two parts being dependent of each other. – When performing inventories of installed software, everything is scanned and the result is often difficult to understand due to the volume and complexity of information reported . The definitions in part two of the standard will enable identification to be simpler therefore making the inventory process more efficient and effective.
The development of the standard is a global project lead by Swedish Standards Institute (SIS) and today the following countries is represented Australia, France, Japan, China, Sweden, Belgium, Germany, Canada, USA, Spain, Finland and United Kingdom.
